Camp-out challenge for charity
A night under the stars is coming up this weekend for local teenagers, for a fundraiser organised by West Nottinghamshire College.
Thirty 16 and 17-year-olds will be camping out at Oaklands Manor Outdoor Leadership Centre in Derbyshire on Saturday (31 May), as part of the National Citizen Service (NCS) project, while raising cash for Mansfield’s Halls Homeless Support Project.
The NCS project, which has been delivered across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, is a government-led initiative designed to support young people in the transition to adulthood through residential projects and community-based activities.
The group will be experiencing a night sleeping rough as part of their social action plan which is an integral part of the NCS programme.
The camp-out will see them cooking their own food and sleeping without tents in the outdoors. This is just one of 17 activities being organised by the college throughout the summer period and a total of 280 young people will be involved in the project during the summer and autumn schemes.
The college’s project leader for NCS Nigel Oldham said: “This is the second year that the college has been involved in the NCS project and once again it’s a pleasure to see these individuals find new confidence and enjoying new things through a range of activities.
“As well as raising money for a well-known local charity, the group will be enjoying team-building, problem solving and socialising with new friends.”
