Teenagers to put wheels in motion (again!)
Staff at West Nottinghamshire College are asking the public to donate their old bicycles for an innovative restoration project which will benefit young people in Ashfield.
Current students and young people who are considering attending the college’s Ashfield campus will be embarking on a restoration project in May which will see them learning how to fix, restore and care for a bike.
Project leaders are now in the process of collecting old, unwanted bicycles to use for the 10-week project which will eventually see the bikes being sold to raise funds for an enterprise project. Those who take part in the project will also have the opportunity to keep a bike each.
The project is recruiting to the Ashfield centre’s European Social Fund project and will engage with 16-18 year-olds who are Not in Education Employment or Training (NEETs) or those who are at risk of becoming NEET in the Ashfield area.
Learner support co-ordinator Pete Benyon said: “There are bound to be people out there who have been meaning to take an old bicycle to the skip and it’s just sat in the garage getting in the way.
“We’ll gladly take the bikes off their hands and we’re really excited about the restoration programme. It will not only give young people new skills but we hope that it will inspire them to become involved in coming to study at the college, get involved with a worthwhile volunteering project and gain new confidence.”
For anyone wishing to donate an old bike, please contact Pete Benyon on 01623 627191 ext 8623 or Jan Maunder on ext 8100 to arrange collection.
