The return of great British wrestling
A glimpse of 1970’s Saturday sporting television is bounding its way to Create Theatre’s stage in Mansfield.
Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks will transport audiences back to 1970's Saturday afternoons
The tale of famous wrestlers Big Daddy Vs Giant Haystacks by Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon will show how millions of Britons were captured in the 1970s and 1980s by the sporting phenomenon of watching two fat men – Shirley Crabtree and Martin Ruane – pretend to fight each other.
Komedia Entertainment and The Foundry Group bring this award-winning knockout tale of the rise and fall of British wrestling to Create Theatre on Saturday 15 February. It has won best theatre award at the Buxton Fringe, best actor award at the Brighton Festival Awards and Fringe Guru’s Editor’s Choice Award.
Recently featured on BBC4’s documentary ‘When Wrestling Was Golden: Grapples, Grunts and Grannies’ the play brings the famous feuding wrestlers back to life.
Theatre co-ordinator Adam Pownall said: “This is set to be a hilarious, action-packed show and for anyone who remembers the original belly flops and headlocks from the 70s and 80s it will bring back many memories.
“Equally, for those younger generations who don’t remember the original wrestling, they’re set for a fun night. This working class theatre is very reflective of the era when times were harder and expensive nights out weren’t common place and a family gathering round the television was a typical Saturday night scene.”
Tickets for the performance, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £8 each, £6 for concessions and £5 for students. A tag-team ticket for two costs £10. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the website at www.createtheatre.co.uk or by calling 01623 413363.
