Kind-hearted students keep up with charity mission
BTEC National Year 2 Travel and Tourism are set to stage their own careers event on Wednesday (25th Feb) at West Nottinghamshire College’s Derby Road site as well as raising funds for African children.
The group have arranged a number of guest speakers from the travel and tourism industry, including cabin crew, travel agents and holiday reps to speak to fellow students about the many career opportunities available to them after studies and how to progress in the travel industry.
They will also be raising money via a raffle for the Kebba Jarjou Memorial Nursery in the village of Serekunda in The Gambia. This follows on from the group’s week long visit to Africa back in January which formed part of the residential unit studied on the BTEC course.
Prior to flying out to Africa, the group of 11 students collected donations from friends, family and college staff to give to the needy pupils at nursery, which caters for three to eight year olds.
They successfully raised over £1,000 worth of clothing, toys, equipment and gifts which they donated to the school. This week they are hoping to raise even more funds which they will then use to purchase more clothes and toys for the youngsters and are asking staff and students to donate old clothes, pens, colouring books etc which will be flown over to the youngsters.
Student Phillippa Jones (18) said: “We are all really excited about making this week’s event a big success and are doing all we can to raise more money for the children we met in Africa at our careers event.
“We’ve already had a number of kind voucher donations from companies such as Greggs and McDonalds to put in our raffle and we’ve got many more fundraising ideas in the pipeline. We’re also looking forward to hearing great careers advice from our guest speakers on the day.”
