Victory lunches at college café
People can step back in time and enjoy food with a 1940s twist, served up by West Nottinghamshire College students.
The college’s BAY6 Centre and Coffee Bar is laying on a Second World War-inspired menu from 7 to 10 May to mark the anniversary of VE Day.
Retro fayre includes Woolton pie with potato ‘floddies’ – similar to a potato cake – and gravy costing £3. Named after Frederick Marquis, 1st Lord Woolton – who became Minister of Food in 1940 – the pie was a popular nutritional dish during the war-time food shortages.
Other items on the menu include root vegetable soup with a roll and butter for £1.50, corned beef fritters with potato floddies and roasted vegetables for £2.50, and treacle tart pudding for 50p.
Members of Mansfield Age Concern, who are regular visitors to the centre, will be sampling the food on the Friday.
Food will be available from 10am to 2pm throughout the week, with tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches also served up during these times at the venue in Woodhouse Road, Mansfield.
People can just turn up although parties of eight or more are advised to book a table on 01623 413027.
BAY6 is open to the public for hot and cold refreshments and provides a practical training and working environment for students with learning difficulties or disabilities.
