Fitness for the littlest
Children at a college nursery are keeping healthy and fit, thanks to an exercise programme designed by sport students.
Weekly fitness sessions are being delivered to pre-school children at Butterflies Day Nursery – part of West Nottinghamshire College – by students on the Diploma in Health, Fitness and Exercise Instruction.
The fitness and exercise classes at the nursery are boosting the children’s social skills and self-confidence while equipping the students with the skills to deliver tailored training programmes.
The students have incorporated animals and children’s cartoon characters into the classes – which are taking place over six weeks – to make them fun for the tots, who are aged three to five years old.
Student Danny Butler, 17, from Langwith Junction, said: “We asked the children what characters they liked on television and incorporated these into the exercise sessions and they can improvise in the playground too.
“With childhood obesity on the health agenda nationally, we were keen to bring exercise and fitness to this youngest, most energetic group at our college and we’re delighted that they are enjoying what we’re teaching them too!”
