Excellence in equality
West Nottinghamshire College is enhancing its commitment to equality and diversity by linking up with lesbian, gay and bi-sexual charity, Stonewall.
The college has signed up to Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme – Britain’s good practice employers’ forum on sexual orientation, of which some of the UK’s largest and most successful businesses are members.
It has also joined the charity’s College Champions programme which provides colleges with tailored support and guidance to challenge homophobic bullying and celebrate differences.
On Friday (8 February), the charity’s head of education Wes Streeting, will be visiting the college’s Derby Road campus to talk to students and staff about celebrating lesbian, gay and bi-sexual (LGB) issues as well as how to challenge homophobic behaviour.
Chair of the college’s equality and diversity steering group Louise Knott said: “The Stonewall programmes will help us to judge how well we encourage LGB equality at the college while highlighting what more we can do.
“The sessions will help our staff and students to tackle, promote and celebrate other LGB issues while at college.”
This is the college’s first activity with Stonewall during February, which is Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender History Month. The college is also looking to create an LGB staff and student networking group.
