Spreading cheer across the community
Students from West Nottinghamshire College have been creating happiness in the form of artwork on World Smile Day.
To recognise World Smile Day on Friday (5 October) over 50 students from childcare, foundation studies and the BAY6 centre created colourful collages as part of a volunteering project, with the theme of ‘seasons’ in mind.
The project was set by Mansfield-based charity – APTCOO (A Place To Call Our Own), to brighten up the walls of the centre throughout the year.
The centre, on Botany Avenue in Mansfield, provides support for disabled children and their families and students from the college often use its services.
College learner coach James Levy said: “We wanted to make our students aware of this worthwhile charity and offer them a volunteering project with a difference. Also, we wanted to create images that would make people smile, which ties in well with World Smile Day.
“We contacted APTCOO to ask what they would like the artwork to be themed on and chief executive Carol Burkitt suggested the four seasons, so there would be something cheerful all year round on the walls.
“The collages and paintings that our students have worked on are absolutely brilliant and we’re looking forward to delivering these to the charity next week.”
