Tim’s an inspiration to students
An ex-student from West Nottinghamshire College inspired new learners with his volunteering and youth work experience last week (6 September).
Tim Isterling, 19, from Mansfield Woodhouse who studied the BTEC National in Sport two years ago, visited the college to encourage students on the catering and hospitality programmes to have a go at volunteering and recognise the benefits associated with it.
Tim, who is now a studying youth work and ministry at London’s Oasis College, has been involved in volunteering for a number of years. As a young teen, Tim set up a youth drop in group for young people at Mansfield’s Baptist Church and was more recently involved in a volunteering project in India.
He was recently nominated to carry the Olympic torch through Lincoln after being recognised for his success with youth work and brought the torch into college for students to see.
Tim said: “It was great to meet the students at my old college and it’s pleasing to see that many students are already involved in volunteering in their communities and the college supports them in accessing these projects.
“I’m looking forward to my next volunteering venture in the future. I’d like to raise funds to set up a charity for boys and men to access sport in India.”
The college’s enterprise, entitlement and employability manager Cate Hunt said: “Tim was a real inspiration to our learners and he should be really proud of the work he’s done since leaving college.
“Our learner coaches at West Notts are constantly thinking of new and creative ways to engage students in volunteering projects and offer great support to those who get involved and I’m sure Tim has given many of our students food for thought.”
