College course brings skills from the Orient
Folk can study a Japanese natural alternative to mental wellbeing on a new community course starting in September.
West Nottinghamshire College is running a six-week course on the art of Naikan, an ancient self-reflection technique. It is being run in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council.
Translated from Japanese, Naikan means ‘inside looking’ and was created by a Buddhist practitioner of the Jodo Shinshu sect. This structured method of self-reflection helps people understand themselves, their relationships and human existence.
Although Naikan’s roots are found in Buddhism, the college course removes the religious undertones to make the self-reflection open to anyone regardless of their belief.
It is open to people aged over 19 who want to see the world from a new perspective or those keen to pursue a career in counselling or psychotherapy.
Starting on 12 September, the course will be held at Park Road Resource Centre, Mansfield Woodhouse, each Wednesday from 1-3pm. The cost of the course is £5 unless you are on means tested benefits.
