Students unleash ‘Arts Fest’
A festival of arts, culture and creativity is being served up by talented students at West Nottinghamshire College.
Students across the school of creative industries and digital technologies are staging their end-of-year shows to showcase the best of their final projects.
‘Arts Fest 2012’ consists of theatre productions, live music, fashion shows and exhibitions of art and design, media, film and computer science.
It kicks off with two live performances of Chasin Status by BTEC level 3 extended diploma performing arts students on Wednesday 13 June from 1pm to 2.30pm and 7pm to 8.30pm, followed by an evening performance on Thursday 14 June from 7pm to 8.30pm.
Based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, it sees students portraying new characters dealing with modern-day issues and relevant to a contemporary audience. The play will be performed in the 150-seat Create Theatre at the Derby Road campus and is open to the public, with tickets priced £5 adults and £3 concessions available in advance from the college.
A creative exhibition of work by art, fashion and graphic design students at Mansfield Museum will be officially opened by principal Asha Khemka OBE at a private viewing for students, their families and VIPs at 6pm on Wednesday 13 June. The free exhibition is open to the public from Thursday 14 June until Tuesday 26 June at the museum in Leeming Street.
A gala evening on Monday 18 June, consisting of fashion show Ethereal World by BTEC clothing and textiles students, live music from music students and an exhibition by media, film and computer science students, takes place in the college’s new £5m Create building for a specially-invited audience including guests from each industry.
It follows a fashion show taking place earlier that day for local schoolchildren, where students will parade their original creations influenced by the French Renaissance period, architecture, art and culture.
The media, film and computer science exhibition then runs until Friday 22 June and includes films, visual work, animations, gaming and computer-controlled robots.
Head of creative industries and digital technologies, Steve McAlone, said: “The Arts Fest is firmly established as one of the highlights in the college calendar and evolves creatively each year.
“It always generates a major buzz and it’s fantastic to see our students’ hard work come to fruition through some stunning performances, exhibitions and interactive demonstrations.
“This is the first time the festival has been held in our new Create building, so the combination of a first-class venue and high-quality work means audiences are in for a treat.”
