A right royal time at West Notts
Diamond Jubilee fever is set to hit West Nottinghamshire College in June with a party and a time capsule burial.
To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the Students’ Union will be hosting a ‘big lunch’ in the West One diner at the college’s Derby Road campus on Friday (1 June). The diner will be decked out in flags and bunting and students will be bringing their own selection of food in during the lunchtime period (12-2pm).
To recognise the seven decades in which the monarch has reigned, there will be games and music played associated with the different eras. Live music will be supplied at the party courtesy of the college’s own elite music students.
Chefs in the catering team will be baking a large union flag-themed sponge cake to share among the party goers.
Also, to mark Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne students are being asked to write a story, create a musical masterpiece or work of art, a poem or a take a photograph which is inspired by The Queen.
Students are also asking friends and family if they remember The Queen’s visit to Mansfield during her Silver Jubilee tour or maybe recall the coronation in 1952 and their thoughts will be included in the celebratory capsule.
The time capsule will be buried in the college’s new build site at the Derby Road campus at the end of June during a special ceremony to be announced in the coming weeks.
President of the Students’ Union James Stafford said: “There’s nothing our students like more than a good celebration and what better way to end the last day of term with a party dedicated to our Queen.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime national event that many people may never experience again and we’re so proud to be getting into the royal spirit of things with the burial of the college’s own time capsule for people to look at in many years to come.”
