College gets creative with new courses
West Nottinghamshire College is expanding its range of university-level courses.
From September 2012 the college will offer three new Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) as part of its package of higher education programmes.
It will take the total number of HE courses offered at the college to 22, which range from HNDs and HNCs to foundation degrees and a top-up honours degree.
The HND in Creative Media Production (Moving Image) will help students develop the practical skills for a wide range of careers in the broadcast media industry.
Subjects covered in the course include film studies, research and development techniques for film and video, with optional subjects spanning camera and lighting techniques, TV studio production, sound design, TV advertisements and script-writing.
Students on the course can also apply for work experience in the creative media sector.
Two further HNDs in computing and systems development has been created, with pathways in networking or software development. These will prepare students for careers in network support, administration, security and management, programming, web design or database development.
The networking pathway offers the opportunity to develop skills such as network management and security while the software pathway offers the opportunity to develop professional skills in subjects such as web development, programming and games development.
The three courses are full-time and run over two years. The HND in Creative Media Production (Moving Image) will be based at the college’s new £5m Create building at the Derby Road campus where students have access to state-of-the art television, radio and digital recording studios, along with multi-media, animation and video editing suites.
The HNDs in computing and systems development will be held in the computer science area at the college’s Derby Road campus.
Head of creative industries and digital technologies, Steve McAlone said: “I’m delighted we are increasing our range of higher education programmes in this exciting and dynamic sector.
“These new courses will be delivered by tutors with industry experience and, combined with the cutting-edge facilities on offer, will ensure students gain the skills and experience needed to progress to a top-up degree or into their chosen career.”
