Hair’s to the Olympics!
Hairdressing students at West Nottinghamshire College are getting their hair colours, combs and crimpers ready for an inter-college competition.
Students on a range of hairdressing courses at The Academy – the college's commercial and training hair and beauty salon – will be battling it out with rivals from Worksop-based North Notts College and Chesterfield College in the annual hairdressing contest on Thursday 24 May.
The event, which takes place at The Academy in Regent Street, Mansfield, will see the students’ cutting, colouring and technical hairdressing skills put to the test through a series of hair-styling competitions.
The main theme of this year’s competition is based on the forthcoming London 2012 Olympics; with completed hair designs paraded in a catwalk-style show at the college’s Create building at the Derby Road campus later in the day.
Hairdressing curriculum manager Jacquelyn Clay said: “Our students have some amazing hair designs planned, which are all cleverly themed around the Olympics.
“Every year the competition creates a real buzz of excitement between the three colleges and it’s great to see the new and innovative hair designs created by all the competing students.”
Judging this year’s competition are Carla Fisher from City & Guilds, Tracey Cooper, owner of Mossop's hair salon in Mansfield Woodhouse, and Maureen Reynolds, manager of Mansfield’s Pompadour Hair and Beauty Supplies.
The highest-scoring college will walk away with the winner’s shield, while first, second and third placed students will receive prizes of hair-styling equipment donated by Pompadour, Wella and City & Guilds.
