Students to create a buzz at science and nature event
A Level students at West Nottinghamshire College will be creating a buzz this Friday (8 July) during a local science and nature event.
A group of students, some whom have completed their biology and environmental studies A levels, will be accompanying tutor Claire Kawamoto to the ‘Science on the Heath’ event at the Oak Tree Leisure Centre, Mansfield, to showcase their bee-nesting project.
The event, organised by the University of Nottingham and Mansfield District Council, is open to schools and colleges and will include interactive stands, weather and wildlife surveys, information about DNA and genetics as well as a heathland bug hunt, walk and bird watch at the Oak Tree Heath Local Nature Reserve.
Two of the learners attending, Sam Wilson and Christopher Marriott (both 18), are hosting a West Nottinghamshire College environmental information stand, where they will be talking about their wildflower meadow and bee-nesting project.
The students have recently created a new wildflower meadow at the college’s Derby Road campus fields, designed to encourage the endangered bumble bee to nest in boxes which have been crafted by joinery students.
They will be on hand at the event from 10am-3pm to talk to visitors about how they can help to increase the declining bee population as well as discuss the many exciting biology and environmental projects that students on the A Level programme can become involved in.
