Students support national charity
Travel and tourism students at West Nottinghamshire College have handed over a cheque to a national charity after a recent round of fundraising.
First year students from the BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism have spent the last couple of weeks generating cash through fancy dress days, cake sales and raffle sales to donate to The Meningitis Trust.
The group of 25 learners have been raising cash for The Meningitis Trust this year – a charity very close to the heart of their travel and tourism tutor, Sam Haywood.
Sixteen years ago Sam tragically lost her 22-year-old brother to the virus and she and her family have been avid fundraisers for the charity since their loss.
Sam said: “I am humbled that the students have been raising cash for The Meningitis Trust - one of their chosen charities, as it’s very close to my heart.
“They’ve worked really hard with their fundraising ideas and they managed to raise £273 which I think they should be really impressed with.”
The Meningitis Trust’s community development manager for the country’s central region, Jo Killick, joined students this week (21 June) to collect the cheque and gave a presentation to students about the charity and how donations like their can help patients and their families.
She said: “The students’ donation is very gratefully appreciated. Their money will go towards funding art sessions for children who have recovered from meningitis, printing the health information cards and providing bereaved parents with the vital counselling services that we offer.”
The students have also been raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society as well as supporting pupils from Priestsic Primary School in Sutton-in-Ashfield with an allotment tidying project.
