Students raise vital funds for children’s hospice
Kind-hearted hospitality students from West Nottinghamshire College presented a bumper cheque to a children’s hospice last Friday (20 May).
The students raised £230 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice through cake sales, raffles, name the Easter chick competition and other fun activities.
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, which was officially opened last week by Sophie, Countess of Wessex, offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy both in their own homes and at the hospice based in North Anston in Sheffield.
The students, who are all studying on courses which will lead them into careers in the hospitality and catering industry, were inspired by tutor Lynne Booth who, three years ago, did a coast to coast cycle ride to raise funds for Bluebell Wood.
Lynne added: “Our students were really touched when they learnt about the work that the hospice does for young people and were very enthusiastic and proactive about raising money through their creative activities. We’re looking to continue to support the hospice through future fundraising initiatives.”
Bluebell Wood fundraiser, Sarah Gillies visited the students at the college’s Number 19 Brasserie and training restaurant to collect the cheque. She said: “It’s fantastic the amount raised by the students; we are really grateful for their support.
“The hospice costs over £2.5 million to run each year and, as we don’t receive any statutory government funding, it is initiatives such as these that enable us to give care and support to children who are unlikely to reach adulthood.”
