Students at the cutting edge for hairdressing competition
Hairdressing students from West Nottinghamshire College are getting the scissors, combs and hair pins ready for an inter-college competition.
Fifteen learners studying a range of hairdressing courses at The Academy – the college's Mansfield town centre-based commercial and training salon – will be joining rivals from Worksop-based North Notts College and Chesterfield College to compete in the annual hairdressing competition.
The all-day event, taking place at Chesterfield College on Friday (15 April), will test the students’ latest cutting, colouring and technical hairdressing skills through a range of themed competitions.
Level one students will be challenged to perform a blow-dry, set or hair take-up, while level two students will put their futuristic creativity to the test, creating hair designs based on Japanese anime with cutting and colouring skills. Avante garde styling will be the theme for level three students.
West Nottinghamshire College’s hairdressing curriculum manager, Jacquelyn Clay, said: “There’s a real sense of excitement here at The Academy as our students practice for the competitions.
“I’ve already seen some amazing designs from our students and I am very confident that they will impress the judges.”
Judges at this year’s event are Michael Lewis, who starred in Channel 4's Great British Hairdresser, April Allen, of Rendezvous wholesalers, and Dave Cottrell, from LaBeeby Salonwear.
The winning college will walk away with the college shield, with students receiving hair-styling equipment as prizes.
