Rugby fun for the young
West Nottinghamshire College’s youngest members are learning about sport through rugby sessions.
Three and four-year-olds at the college’s Butterflies Day Nursery have been enjoying weekly 'child-friendly' rugby classes set up by sports student Ed Simmons.
Ed, 21, from Mansfield Woodhouse, is currently studying on the NVQ Level 3 in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise and has been offering basic rugby tips to youngsters each Tuesday afternoon.
Ed, who plays rugby for Mansfield First team, said: “Not only have these sessions been good to raise the profile of rugby, but it’s been great to introduce the children to a sport which is helping their co-ordination, agility and social skills.
“They’ve really enjoyed the sessions over the last few weeks and I’ve seen their confidence increase no end as they run and catch the ball and have a go at kicking and scoring a try.”
The pre-school group, who are children of college staff, students and families in the local community, will complete their last rugby session with Ed on Tuesday (12 April) and will go on to learn football skills in the coming weeks.
