It's a fair trade for students' designs
A Level students at West Nottinghamshire College have been 'showing off their labels' for a good cause.
Students on the geography and politics courses have marked Fairtrade Fortnight (28 February-13 March) by taking part in a t-shirt design contest.
The theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight is ‘Show off Your Label’, geared to raise the public’s awareness of purchasing Fairtrade cotton products.
Winner of the college’s competition, which attracted 40 entries, was Dominique Grocott, (17), from Mickleover, Derby, who won a Fairtrade food hamper.
Dominque said: “I wanted to represent all things natural in my t-shirt design and include the selection of Fairtrade food available in supermarkets. I’m going to enjoy trying the wonderful things in my hamper.”
A level students Jade McGirr, Zoe Carter, Becca Goulding and Laura Chinery secured runner-up prizes of boxes of Fairtrade chocolate.
Tutor of geography and politics, Krystina Shah, said: “I was overwhelmed by the quality and number of entries into the design competition.
“Our students have shown real initiative and talent with their creations and I’ll be sending our winning and runner-up entries to the Fairtrade Foundation in the hope that it decides to use one of the designs.”
Fairtrade Fortnight is run by The Fairtrade Foundation. Established in 1992, it is the independent non-profit organisation that licenses use of the FAIRTRADE mark on products in the UK in accordance with internationally-agreed Fairtrade standards.
