College gets healthy seal of approval

West Nottinghamshire College has scooped a national kite-mark for improving the health and wellbeing of its staff and students.

It has joined only 29 other further education colleges in the UK in securing the Government-backed ‘Healthy Further Education College’ accolade.

Healthy FE status is awarded to colleges that actively engage staff and learners in the promotion of health and well-being; leading to increased performance and achievement.

It is backed by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), Department of Health (DH), and the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

To achieve the award, the college’s health, welfare and safeguarding team demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement in the range and level of health support services, along with its work with local health organisations.

Team leader Jamie Wragg said: "We’ve worked really hard over the past year to extend our health and advice services across college, so it’s especially pleasing to achieve this national standard in recognition of this.

"Health and wellbeing is really high on our agenda and our excellent range of services improves not only the quality of life of staff and students, but also their performance in class and in the workplace.”

The college’s health, welfare and safeguarding team provides advice on all aspects of health and wellbeing, and has seven fully-qualified pastoral support advisors supporting students at all campuses across Mansfield and Ashfield.
