Students are such great sports
Mansfield schoolchildren got into the sporting mood during the lead-up to half-term, thanks to students on West Nottinghamshire College’s activity leadership course.
The group of 18 learners, who are studying the subject at NVQ Level 2, helped organise a ‘4 Sports Challenge’ at the Manor School, Mansfield Woodhouse, involving pupils of three primary schools.
Pupils at Oak Tree Lane, St Philip Neri and Birklands primary schools competed in benchball, mini football, cricket and sports hall athletics at the event on 16 February.
It came after the students were approached by Callum Lawson, Inspire 2 Achieve sports co-ordinator at the Mansfield School Sport Partnership, to lead the children through a range of popular sports.
School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) are groups of schools working together to develop PE and sport opportunities for all young people in their area.
College sports tutor, Rachael Evans, said: “Our students worked really well with the children and managed the tournament in a very professional way. It gave them a real sense of responsibility and helped them to understand some of the processes required to run sporting events involving young participants.”
NVQ activity leadership student Emily Hammond (16), from Clipstone, said: “Everybody really enjoyed the tournament. We did everything from arranging the teams, to timekeeping and refereeing.
“It was great to see the children getting connected with different sports and we helped them understand the essential rules of each game. I’d definitely get involved in something like this again.”
