A behind-the-scenes look at global manufacturing company
T-Level students seeing the many aspects of SPE’s manufacturing success
Last Thursday (26 September) marked National Manufacturing Day, which sees manufacturers throughout the UK open their doors to members of the public for a behind-the-scenes look at how their business works.
This provides young people with the opportunity to see the diverse careers that exist within the manufacturing sector.
Our engineering curriculum were delighted to have the chance to visit Swifttool Precision Engineering Ltd (SPE) to take a look at what goes on at the Sutton-in-Ashfield-based company.
SPE has supplied precision machined components, kits, assemblies and fabrications to clients across the world for over 40 years.
The second-year Engineering T-Level students were given a warm welcome and talk from the company’s head of apprenticeships, Kahl Newrick, followed by an interactive tour of the workshops.
After lunch, there was an informative question and answer session, which gave the students the opportunity to ask the head of apprenticeships, the engineering manager, an apprentice and the chief engineer about careers within the sector and what working at SPE is like.
Stuart Smith, from Rolls Royce, delivered a talk about his role at the company as well as other types of work experience he has had in the industry.
Head of engineering at the college, Ben Toule, said: “Industry visits like this are essential to highlight to our learners the opportunities that are available to them within engineering.
“We are extremely grateful that local businesses are willing to open their doors to our students to enable them to experience a real-life manufacturing environment that showcases not only technology, but also the potential careers that are on offer.”
