Dementia nurses visit college’s ward
Students in health and social care welcomed nurses from the Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ dementia specialist team last week.
Joining them in the college’s Robin Hood Ward at the Derby Road campus, dementia nurse specialist Adele Bonsall and admiral nurse Georgia Goulding spoke about the different types of dementia that healthcare practitioners encounter in both hospital and care home settings.
The guests described the various definitions of dementia, as well as the impact of the disease on patient behaviours.
Students learnt more about how hospitals can impact patients with a dementia diagnosis and how to best communicate with them. They were able to ask Georgia and Adele a range of questions to better inform them when working with patients with dementia during their work placements, which helped alleviate some anxieties and improve their awareness.
T-Level student Emily Harrison said: “The dementia specialist nurses presented really valuable information, and as a health and social care student, it will help me when I’m on placement to understand why patients may act a certain way and how they might be feeling.
“It helped us to understand how dementia progresses and that nurse specialists are there to support and help individuals who do not understand why they’re in a certain place.”
