The NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Preparation and Cooking and NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Food and Beverage Service are two short five-week courses offering students the basic skills for entering the hospitality industry.
Learners would work in the college’s training and commercial restaurants every Monday and Friday for five weeks starting Monday 3 February from 9am-4pm.
Throughout the duration of the courses, students will work through fundamental catering and hospitality units such as health and safety, food safety, dough cookery, working with meat, fish, poultry and vegetables, and general kitchen skills, as well as customer service, bar work and learning how to handle cash.
Those on the food and beverage qualification would gain the extra skill of learning how to serve drinks and accompaniments to customer and promoting additional products and keeping front line areas clean and tidy.
These Level 1 courses were rolled out for the first time last year in partnership with Job Centre Plus and saw eight individuals graduate with flying colours.
The Level 2 Certificate in General Patisseries and Confectionary is also being run at the Derby Road campus beginning on Monday 16 March from 9am-4pm. This course will run for 15 days through March, April, May and June.
Students will discover the art of making hot and cold desserts, using safe and hygienic working practices as well as producing paste products, using a range of fillings, glazes, creams and icing. Biscuit, cake and sponge-making techniques will be taught as well as learning how to make fermented dough products.
All courses are free to those aged over 19 and are unemployed and in receipt of a qualifying means-tested benefit. For those who aren’t in receipt of a benefit the Level 1 and 2 courses are £362.
People who are interested in any of the courses should call the college’s community education team on 01623 413602.
