Students’ cycling success for Ghana project
Staff and students at West Nottinghamshire College were early risers last Sunday (16 May) morning as they set off on their fundraising bike ride to Skegness, raising over £2,000 for charity.
The group of twenty riders set off at 7am on their bicycles from the college’s Derby Road campus for the 80-mile journey and all arrived safe and sound in Skegness after seven hours.
The ride was organised by Luke Frakes, the college’s current president of the Students’ Union, with great support from the whole Students' Union team, to help fund this summer’s student volunteering visit to Ghana.
The funds will enable a group of students and staff to travel to the country’s Kwahu East District in July. They will spend two weeks teaching English and maths to schoolchildren, helping re-build a village school and visiting an orphanage.
Luke said: “The ride was an amazing experience. It was filled with moments of elation as well as moments of overwhelming hatred for those Nottinghamshire hills!
“All riders did so well to cycle the whole journey and I’m so proud of everyone who gave up a full day to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. It was great to see such a strong working relationship between staff and students. Early figures indicate that we’ve raised over £2,000 from the ride.”
