Jordan builds up his confidence for UK Skills heats
West Nottinghamshire College brickwork student Jordan Edwards had a taste of a tense competition environment yesterday when he came third at The Guild of Bricklayers' annual bricklaying regional heats (17 May).
Jordan, 19, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, who studies on the NVQ Level 1 in bricklaying at the college’s Construction and Logistics Skills Academy, came third in the juniors’ section of the regional heats which saw him competing with students from Lincoln College, North Lindsey College, Derby College, Grantham College, Grimsby College and Chesterfield College.
Certificates and winners’ cups were presented by Julian Walden, West Nottinghamshire College’s new associate director of learning for construction and building services. Julian was also president of the Guild of Bricklayers last year.
Now Jordan has experienced the competition atmosphere, he’s all set to compete in the UK Skills Build heats at Moulton College next week (27 May). He will compete with other colleges in the Midlands and, if successful, could be set to compete in the national finals during a three-day UK Skills competition in Wales later this year.
Programme area leader for brickwork at West Nottinghamshire College, Tim Bond, said: “Jordan did really well in the juniors’ section and we’re proud of him achieving third place. Fellow student Jordan Freely also produced good work in the seniors’ competition but sadly wasn’t placed in the top three.
“There was some really intense competition from the other colleges so we applaud them both for their efforts. We’re now looking forward to supporting Jordan Edwards at the UK Skills heats next week and we’re delighted that he has the confidence and ability to compete at this level.”
