Multi-sports festival gets schoolchildren moving
A sports festival designed to get youngsters more active and co-ordinated had resounding success at West Nottinghamshire College this week.
More than 100 five to seven-year-olds from 11 Mansfield primary schools joined sports students at the Mansfield-based college for a day of activities and games on Tuesday (16 January). Each of the games were specially designed by the learners on the Level 3 sports programme.
Held in the college’s sports hall at the Derby Road campus, pupils from schools including Sutton Road Primary School, Peafield Lane Academy and King Edward Primary School, got to grips with a range of games which have been designed to improve agility, co-ordination, balance and accuracy.
The games, which involved girls and boys in mixed teams, included a ladder run task, target shooting with bean bags, a cricket wicket challenge and relay, javelin and frisbee games.
Sport and coaching tutor Rachael Evans said: “Today has been a really exciting and successful day for the children. They are much younger than the children we’ve typically created sports programmes for, so we’ve ensured that the activities are suited to them but still challenging and fun.
“They’ve been very engaged with these multi-skilled games and have really enjoyed what our Level 3 students put together in this circuit format.”
Each pupil was awarded with a medal and certificate for participating in the games, by Nicki Biggs, Mansfield school games organiser. Nicki works with local schools to deliver more activities around Change4Life in line with the school curriculum.
