Students to quiz parliamentary candidates
West Nottinghamshire College students will quiz parliamentary candidates visiting its Derby Road campus on Wednesday (28 April).
Students including many first-time voters will pose questions on topics such as employment, further education, university fees, first-time home buying, fuel prices and the minimum wage to five would-be MPs representing the Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Independent parties.
Visiting candidates will be:
- Jason Zadrozny, Liberal Democrat candidate for Ashfield
- Eddie Smith, Independent candidate for Ashfield
- Tracy Critchlow, Conservative candidate for Mansfield
- André Camilleri, Independent candidate for Mansfield
- Mark Spencer, Conservative candidate for Sherwood.
Alan Meale MP, Labour candidate for Mansfield, will be visiting the college on Tuesday 4 May, when he will also meet with students at its Derby Road campus.
The college’s learner voice co-ordinator, Sue Harries, said: “These visits provide a fantastic opportunity for students to find out more about the policies of key political parties and their plans for the area.
“It will allow them to really engage in politics, ask the candidates some no-nonsense questions and, for those aged over 18, make a more informed choice when they go to the ballot box on 6 May.”
Among the students meeting the candidates will be learners from the A Level government and politics course and the BTEC national diploma in travel and tourism.
Both visits (28 April and 4 May) will take place from 12.30-1.30pm in the second-floor diner at the college's Derby Road campus.
