Pupils log on to largest online careers seminar
Pupils at Vision Studio School in Mansfield sought useful online careers advice this week, joining thousands of other students in an attempted Guinness World Record challenge.
Created by The East and West Midlands Apprenticeship Ambassador Network, Workpays and GetMyFirstJob, The Big Assembly aimed to set the record for the largest online careers advice seminar ever.
Schools, young people, careers advisors and employers from across the nation logged online at 8.45am on Monday (7 March) in the live video streamed to thousands across the UK wanting to find out more about apprenticeships and career options post-16.
It was introduced by apprenticeships and skills minister Robert Halfon, and featured special films of and by apprentices, as well as questions and answers with experts.
The aim was to get more than 5,000 log-ins and to set a new Guinness World Records title in the process. It didn’t quite get that many, ending with 1,809 log-ins from 200 separate schools and colleges, but more than doubled the target for the number of young people who actually watched it – topping 10,000.
Personal coach at Vision Studio School, Tom Carter said: “Students are starting to engage in this kind of technology more and more – it’s a useful way of hitting a broader audience. We do have assemblies on careers guidance and I think more sessions like this, which could last longer, would be really useful.”
Health and social care student Britney Rayner said: “I saw some good advice online about apprenticeships, and it was good how it engaged everyone in trying to get a world record.
“After college I may study an apprenticeship as I’d like to work for children with learning disabilities.”
