Careers fair sparks pupils’ career ambitions
Planning ahead and gathering tips and advice on future careers was the name of the game for pupils at Mansfield’s Vision Studio School last week.
Health and social care students Gabrielle Clarke and Libby Plant got some good careers advice from police cadet Reece Buckland.
At Friday’s careers fair (16 December), pupils in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 welcomed representatives from industry and careers advisory services who were on hand to offer information about future employment and training, at the ‘careers market’.
Pupils were also invited to attend mock interviews which helped them develop their skills and confidence when going for future job interviews. Representatives from businesses such as HS2, Babington Group and Learndirect interviewed and coached pupils through the process.
In attendance at the studio school were organisations including Nottingham University Hospitals, the Army, Vision Apprentices and West Nottinghamshire College as well as Nottinghamshire Police and the Universities of Nottingham and Derby.
David Blackadder-Weinstein, content and insight manager, and Oliver Barker, construction manager at High Speed Two (HS2), were on hand to help students in their mock interviews.
David said: “Having a chance to listen to some of the studio school Year 11 pupils’ hopes and aspirations for their future careers was really encouraging. It was very satisfying to be able to look through their first ever CVs and offer some advice on what employers might be looking for and how best to bring their skills and experience to life in a relevant way.
Oliver added: “Talking to students with an interest in engineering brought home to us just what a difference HS2 can make to the career paths of young people all over the country.”
Studio school principal, Chris Hatherall, said: “Today’s careers fair created a lot of interest and careful thought amongst our pupils. It made them realise the vast range of jobs within certain industries and it opened their eyes to their own career potential if they work hard enough.”
