College health and safety team wins top award
West Nottinghamshire College’s health and safety team is celebrating winning a prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety award.
The RoSPA awards scheme is not only about reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work; it also encourages organisations to develop robust health and safety management systems.
The college’s health and safety manager, Susan Fretwell, said: “Over the last three years there’s been a huge overhaul of our health and safety policies and procedures and we’ve spent a lot of time providing staff with the right information to keep both themselves and students safe at work.
“Staff across our ten college sites have really taken ownership of health and safety matters to ensure all curriculum and support areas are adhering to good practice. I’m absolutely thrilled the college has received a silver award in recognition of this.”
David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “West Nottinghamshire College’s health and safety team has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. Organisations which do this deserve to have such dedication recognised and that’s where the RoSPA awards come in.
“As well as there being clear ethical reasons and legal requirements for good health and safety management, there is also a strong business case. RoSPA is delighted to publicly honour organisations which have demonstrated their work to improve performance in this sphere.”
The silver award will be presented at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre on Thursday 13 May. The ceremony will take place alongside the Safety & Health Expo 2010, Europe’s leading annual health and safety event.
