College nursery springs into action
Youngsters at West Nottinghamshire College’s Butterflies nursery will be getting their wellington boots and trowels out next week when they give a springtime helping hand to staff planting native hedgerows at the Derby Road campus (Wednesday 17 March).
The college has been given the hedgerow donation package from the Woodland Trust, containing up to thirty native hedge trees including hawthorn, hazel, holly, dogrose and dogwood.
Next week’s planting follows on from the college’s recent native tree planting on the Derby Road fields which were also donated by the Woodland Trust, supporting their ‘Tree for All’ campaign.
The college is one of many schools and youth groups across the UK to be planting 210,000 native trees this spring through the Woodland Trust’s 'Hedge and Copse' scheme.
College sustainability co-ordinator Billie-Jo Woodiwiss said: “This latest outdoor planting session will increase the youngsters’ knowledge of the world around them and to learn about the seasons and nature in general.
"The children will also be able to learn about wildlife that lives in the hedgerows and this new display will be enjoyed by staff and students for many years to come."
