College Bricklayer Apprentice is Top of The Class
Bricklaying apprentice Matthew Harbor finished top of his class at West Notts College, winning the second year bricklaying competition and beating his nearest rival by over 40 points.
Matthew, who is two thirds of his way through his apprenticeship with local construction firm, Baggaley, scored 90 points out of a possible 93 to beat 20 fellow bricklayers and win a new set of tools for his trade.
John Corrigon of Construction Skills who organised the event said: “Matthew has been a first class student all year, and has a brilliant attitude to his work.”
Chelsey Smith of Baggaley is involved with the apprentices said: “Matthew is proving a very valuable member of the team, he is very able and is making excellent progress. He is very pleasant and keen to learn. I think Matthew has a very promising career ahead of himself, we have every faith in him and we will support him to reach his true potential.”
Matthew’s tutor Tim Bond says, “Right through the course, he has been a first class student and he is a very pleasant young man who always works conscientiously and creatively. We are thrilled with his success in the bricklaying competition and wish him well for the Guild of Bricklayers competition next year. We are delighted to be having Matthew back as a third year student next week where he will undertake his Level 3 Advanced Craft NVQ.”
Matthew will now go on to represent West Notts College and Baggaley Construction at the Guild of Bricklayers competition in May next year.
