College staff to drive forward environmental plan
Staff car parks at West Nottinghamshire College could soon be looking a little emptier – thanks to a lift-share scheme being offered to workers from today (7 September).
It is being launched following a huge response by staff to a college travel survey carried out earlier this year.
The scheme is available to all college staff including drivers and non-drivers, and is being run in conjunction with liftshare.com, the UK’s no.1 car-sharing company.
The college’s sustainability and environmental co-ordinator Billie-Jo Woodiwiss is hoping the scheme will eventually prove beneficial to the environment.
She said: “This is just one part of the college’s travel and environmental plans that we’re really looking forward to getting our staff involved in.
“The scheme is aimed at helping staff to cut their daily travel costs while also reducing congestion and harmful CO2 emissions. It will also provide staff with an easy way to share car journeys with colleagues and potentially make new friends.”
The travel survey revealed that 79% of vehicles travelling to college in the mornings have only one occupant. It is hoped that the introduction of this scheme will cut this figure to 65% in the first year that the scheme is in operation.
Sarah Priestland, who works in the health, safety and welfare team, said: “I will definitely be signing up to the scheme. My friend Annette, who also works at the college, lives just up the road from me and this is the perfect way we can share lifts and cut costs. It means we’ll get to catch up with each other and have a chat during our journey. We also feel it will encourage us to leave the office on time instead of staying behind too much – perfect for work-life balance!”
Staff can log on to the lift share system from today and each registered entry will have the opportunity to win prizes from the college over the coming weeks.
