Double celebrations for College end-of-term
It will be awards all round at West Nottinghamshire College next week as staff and students collect trophies for their year’s efforts at two ceremonies.
The first awards presentation takes place on Friday 26 June at 11am in the West One diner at the Derby Road campus when staff take to the stage at their own Staff Oscars to receive awards for best tutor, best student service as well as an overall special award.
The ‘Staff Oscars’ was requested by students so they could formally thank tutors and support staff for their dedication and commitment at the College over the last academic year.
Sue Harries, Students’ Union Co-ordinator, said: “Students came up with the idea of the Staff Oscars and learners from every College campus have nominated their favourite tutors and members of support staff.
“It’s their special way of saying thank you to staff for their dedication to teaching and learning throughout the year.”
Small trophies and certificates will be handed out by Deputy Principal Tim Grant while childcare student Heather Vernon will entertain the students and staff by singing a selection of songs. Football and rounders matches will take place between staff and students on the Derby Road sports field after the presentations.
This will be followed by an evening of celebration at the College’s annual Student Celebration of Achievement awards at Mansfield Civic Centre on Friday 26 June. Over 50 awards will be presented to students including the Principal’s Special Recognition Awards, Apprentice of the Year and the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Principal Asha Khemka OBE will host the event, which will be attended by VIP guests including the new Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, Councillor David Taylor, plus civic guests from Ashfield and Mansfield district councils.
Asha Khemka OBE, said: “The Celebration of Achievement is one of the highlights of the College year. It gives me a huge sense of pride to meet some of our most outstanding students and present them with well-deserved awards for their hard work, commitment and energy during their time with us.
“It’s great to know some of these students will be returning next year for further studies at the College.”
Four awards have been sponsored by national companies that receive and deliver training in partnership with the College. First UK Bus is sponsoring the Access and Inclusion Award, Center Parcs the Hospitality Award, Linney the Creative Arts Award and DB Schenker the Engineering and Transport Award.
