Beauty Therapy students show off their UK Skills
On Saturday 2nd May, two beauty therapy students from West Nottinghamshire College’s Mansfield town centre-based ‘Academy’ rose to the treatment challenge as they competed at the beauty therapy UK Skills regional heats at City College, Norwich.
Competitors from colleges throughout the region demonstrated their talents and were judged by an expert panel. The judges marked each competitor in their performance, from consultation through a range of salon treatments, including waxing, massage and make up application, as well as advanced treatments such as galvanic facials and faradic treatments.
Larelle Musson (18), who studies on Level 2 Beauty Therapy, and Gemma Marriott (18) who is taking the Level 3 course were entered by their tutors for their continued good performance and professional high level skills.
Tutor Gail Williamson said: “Both girls did really well in their competition heats and they showed the judges that they were able to cope incredibly well under pressure. They received some really good comments back from the judges and we are all hopeful that they continue to the National Finals.”
Larelle came third in her competition where she had to perform a half leg wax, facial, manicure and pedicure and make up. Gemma came second in her round where she had to show her skills with a galvanic facial, a faradic body treatment and perform a full body massage.
Gemma said: “It was a nerve-wracking day but we got more and more confident as the competitions progressed. My favourite element to the competition was the body massage. Now it’s waiting games until the end of May when we see if we score enough points to go through to the finals.”
And there’s more… Today (8th May) Holistic Therapies Diploma student, Karley Otter (23), will be showing off her abilities in reflexology at a UK Skills competition being held at Trafford College in Cheshire.
The top 10 performers from across the country will be put forward for the national finals, to be held at Barnfield in June. Winners from both this and next year’s competitions will compete to go forward to represent the UK in Beauty Therapy in the World Skills competition in Canada in 2011.
