Trevor Wins at Wembley!
Trevor meets Sir Trevor Brooking on stage to collect his award
Mansfield man, Trevor Whitlam (60), went to Wembley this Thursday as he was nominated for a Learner of the Year award. Trevor recently enrolled on the ‘Heading For Success’ Introduction to IT programme which is run by West Nottinghamshire College at Mansfield Town Football Club ground.
College Skills For Life Tutor, Kerstie Stevens, decided to put Trevor’s name forward for the prestigious annual award, “Trevor realised that the ICT class was an opportunity for him to grow. This type of education has not always been available to his age group and he saw this as a chance to succeed and learn new skills and he has really embraced this opportunity. He has put in such effort, delivered 100% attendance and has a great attitude to learning and refuses to give in. He really is an inspirational role model to other adult learners and his colleagues at work. Yesterday we were delighted to find out that Trevor and all of the other 23 learners had been given the titles of Learner of the Year.”
Trevor works for Mansfield District Council as a Street Cleanser and his employers are really rooting for him. Mansfield District Council's Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: "We are so delighted for Trevor after bringing back a trophy of his very own from Wembley! It's great news that Trevor has done so well at this training course which he's worked hard at in his own time. The skills he's learnt also fit in well with the 'Skills for Life' training he's been doing through his job with us at the council."
At Wembley, Trevor met with Sir Trevor Brooking and Garth Crookes as well as Colin Jackson the Olympic Hurdler and Bill Rammell, the Minister for Learning.
“I have enjoyed my course and it’s enabled me to do things on a computer I knew nothing about. I love the fact that it is held at the Stag’s stadium – the team I have supported all my life are now supporting me! I am absolutely amazed that I am one of the Learners of the Year. Both the College and Stags have supported me all along this learning journey as well as my wife Margaret, who has also supported my obsession for football memorabilia in our home for years! Wembley was great and I got a tour round the new stadium as well. It was truly a memorable day.”
Bernard Wale is the Development Manager for the Stags Community Trust and will be accompanying Trevor, Margaret and Kerstie, “Trevor is a real star and has been getting on so well with his studies and is now advancing onto other programmes as his confidence has really soared. Very shortly he will be completing his Edexel Entry 3 programme as well as looking at improving his maths and English skills. We are so thrilled with his winning news.”
