Students run to boost night shelter funds

Santa Clauses, tigers, elves and cows were spotted running away from West Nottinghamshire College this week (18 December).

  • Minister from Mansfield Baptist Church Anne Davies collects the cheque from staff and students
  • Just some of the staff and students at the start of the run

This was all in the name of charity as students and staff from across the college donned their fancy dress for a sponsored 5km fun run organised by the academic studies, public services and sports school of learning.

The fun run, which has become a Christmas tradition at the college, saw over 200 staff and students pounding the pavements from the college’s Derby Road campus, to Berry Hill Park and back to raise cash for the Mansfield Cold Weather Shelter.

Over £1,300 was raised for the winter night shelter charity which is hosted at the Mansfield Baptist Church Centre, on Rosemary Street, which provides refuge for people sleeping rough.

Programme area leader for the school of learning, Trudi Dean, said: “Our students really care about their community and understand that there are many people less fortunate than themselves.

“I’m very proud of everyone’s efforts to help make a difference and for getting involved in the fun run. It’s humbling to hear that due to the cash raised the shelter will be able to open more often to people who need this warm shelter.”
