Century-old tale brought to life at Create
Professional touring Theatre Company; Townsend Productions will be staging a production of Stephen Lowe’s critically acclaimed version of Robert Tressell’s The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists at Mansfield’s Create Theatre in April.
Performed as a two-hander, the production, which runs on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April coincides with the centenary anniversary of the author’s death.
The performance uses instrumentation, songs of the period, movement, physicalisation, comedy and characterisation to create the spirit and clarity of the political message, the play features a year in the life of a group of painters and decorators, as they renovate a three-storey town house for Mayor Sweater.
It traces their struggle for survival in a complacent and stagnating Edwardian England. The workers are the ‘philanthropists’ who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters.
The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £10 per person or £8 for concessions. To buy tickets visit www.createtheatre.co.uk or call 01623 413363.
