International composer is music to students’ ears

Music students at Vision West Notts have been getting industry tips from the mastermind behind hits by stars such as Kylie Minogue, Will Young, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and The Saturdays.

Internationally-renowned composer Paul Statham has spent this week delivering song critique sessions and song-writing workshops to students on a range of music courses.

Students also learnt how to perform as a live band before laying down tracks with Paul in the college’s state-of-the-art recording studios.

The sessions were held in the college’s new Create building, which boasts specialist facilities for music, media and performance students.

Paul, who hails from Shirebrook, studied business studies at the college in 1978.  He then pursued a music career in London, taking his first band B-Movie to national and international success – releasing three singles and four albums followed by a tour of the US and Europe.

In 1999 he co-wrote Here With Me and I'm No Angel with then unsigned singer Dido. Here With Me went on to become a world-wide hit and the album No Angel sold 16 million copies.

Music diploma student Tom Spalding, 20, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, said: “It’s been great working with Paul.  We’ve learnt so much from his experience of the music industry and he’s given me loads of confidence to write my own songs.”

Paul said: “It’s always a pleasure coming back to the college. The students have been very enthusiastic applying their skills to different styles of music and they’ve shown real creativity in the experimental music sessions.”
