A grand technical day out
Students from computing, Esports, media and A-Levels took a trip to EGX London at the city’s Excel Centre during October half-term.
The event is a vibrant celebration of computer games and comic culture, offering students the unique opportunity to engage directly with independent game developers, authors, artists, and actors. This direct interaction provided them with invaluable advice and insights into the pros and cons of the gaming and comic industries.
Major brands like Samsung, ROG, and PCSpecialist were present, enhancing the experience. Students took part in Esports competitions, engaged in forums and question and answer sessions, and received careers advice from industry professionals.
Several universities were on-hand to provide information on academic progression.
Overall, students were able to fully immerse themselves in this extremely busy and popular event.
Advanced Extended Diploma in IT student Ffion Prosser said: “We got to see some parts of London throughout the journey to the Excel Centre, such as The Shard, but I was blown away by how big EXG/Comic con was itself.”
“We saw behind-the-scenes of upcoming indie games and projects and some of my favourite creators and TV stars! People had clearly spent a long time on their costumes, and it was amazing to see how much effort they had made.
“My favourite thing was being able to experience it with my peers; it was so easy to get lost amongst all the people, so it was great to have them as support as we navigated through everything and getting to know them and their interests.
“It was well worth leaving at 8am and returning late in the evening. Some good memories were definitely made, and we can't thank Piers and the computer science team enough for allowing for us to experience it!”
