A sporting chance for Ben and Alex
Two sports students from West Nottinghamshire College are celebrating after being picked for the British Colleges Sport (BCS) East Midlands regional and national hockey teams.
Alex Davies, 17, is studying on the BND in sport and outdoor education and has been selected for the BCS East Midlands regional hockey team after recent hockey trials.
Alex is one of just 26 people aged between 16-19 who have been picked for the regional squad.
Fellow student Ben Morris, 16, who is studying on the BND sports and exercise science course, has not only been selected to play regionally but also nationally following recent trials for the BCS national hockey teams.
He said, “It feels really good to know that I will be playing for England and I'm looking forward to playing the games in the New Year against different teams from across the country. I will have the opportunity to have some training sessions in January to ensure I am performing at my best for the months ahead.”
College sports co-ordinator Rachael Evans said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for both of our young sportsmen. Their determination and skill in their sport has clearly raised their aspirations to go further with their sports studies and the game.
“The kudos of being picked to play for the BCS is brilliant and staff and students at West Nottinghamshire College are really proud of them.”
When the lads aren’t studying or playing hockey, they both enjoy coaching young people at local hockey teams. Ben, from Mansfield, plays for Beeston Hockey Club and Alex, from Skegby, plays for Newark Hockey Club. Both are keen to go to university after their college courses and have ambitions to become teachers.
