Matt's silver success
Ex-brickwork student Matt Tebbett is celebrating after bagging a silver award at the Guild of Bricklayers National Finals this weekend.
Matt (19), from Mansfield Woodhouse, was one of twelve competitiors from across the UK to go forward from the regional finals held in April.
He said: “Friday’s event was amazing and I was very confident upon looking at the drawings which we had to build from. The judge remembered me from the regional finals and commented that I produced very high-quality work.
“I said before the competition that I would be pleased to get first, second or third so I was absolutely thrilled to get silver.”
Matt underwent a whole day of bricklaying tasks and took home the silver award for his efforts for the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire region. The gold award went to Peter Kelly from Newcastle College, representing the northern section. The bronze went to Dale Smith from Bridgewater College, representing the western region.
Matt was accompanied to Walsall College, the venue for this year’s UK finals, by West Nottinghamshire College tutor Tim Bond.
Tim said: “Matt performed incredibly well on the day and remained very calm throughout. The competition was very tense as the judges took over one-and-a-half hours to reach their decision. Matt only just missed out on securing a place in the world finals in Germany next year.
“We are very proud of him achieving this silver award and each competitior contributed to a fantastic competition. Both West Nottinghamshire College and his employers at Baggaley Construction are very proud of his results.”
