Welcoming new students with top events
Full-time students at West Nottinghamshire College are being treated to an entertainment and information-packed two-day event next week at the Derby Road site when the annual freshers’ fair takes place for new students (15 & 16 September).
Companies such as JJB, the army and Nottinghamshire County Council will be there to give advice about their services to young people. Students will be able to enquire about volunteering projects, discover how to become the next ‘Youth Mayor’ as well as visit a jewellery making stall.
The more daring can scale a climbing wall, ride a bucking bronco or have a go on the surfing machine as well as discovering more about martial arts. Entertainment will be in the form of a magician and a fortune teller and prizes can be won on a traditional hook-a-duck stall.
Learner voice co-ordinator Sue Harries, who will be involved with the event, said: “It’s going to be our biggest freshers’ fair to date and will be very useful for our new students who can find out more about their college services as well as have some fun with new friends and get information from the visiting companies.
“Students from all college sites will be joining in the fun and they’ll have the opportunity to join the students’ union as well as purchase freshers’ party tickets which will be on the evening of 25 September at Mansfield’s Civic Centre.”
Meanwhile, the higher education team are gearing up for their very own freshers’ event known as the ‘HE premier’ which kicks off at 1pm on 17 September at the Odeon cinema followed by activities on the Derby Road fields within a marquee.
HE students will have their very own information stands and entertainment lined up in the shape of a bungee trampoline and a space-hopper steeple chase. Exhibitions and advice will be provided in conjunction with partner universities - Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Derby and West Notts’ own student ambassadors to enable new students to get the best from their studies at college.
HE students are being encouraged to ‘try something different’ at the event as well as having the opportunity to meet other students and members of the HE team. Their event will conclude that evening with drinks and snacks at student bar – Chicago Rock in Mansfield’s town centre.
