Young people shine at graduation

More than 150 teenagers took to the stage at a glittering event last week to celebrate their achievements during a summer-long project supported by West Nottinghamshire College.

  • Everyone celebrated in style at the Center Parcs venue
  • Many new friends were made through the NCS project
  • Tony Hall from The Halls Homeless Support project thanked the participants for all the fundraising they did for the Mansfield charity

The teens have been involved in the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme, which is designed to support young people in their transition to adulthood through residential projects and community-based activities.

The NCS is a government-led initiative which provides activities such as outdoor physical challenges, residential projects, community-based projects and countryside camp-out challenges.

Center Parcs played host to a graduation ceremony for the 16 and 17-year-olds on Friday (17 October) who had taken part in a range of projects via West Nottinghamshire College, including abseiling, a zombie run, volunteering projects, a silent disco and raising thousands of pounds for local charities.

Presenting certificates of achievements to the participants was the college’s deputy principal Patricia Harman and attending the function were friends and family of participants along with Tony Hall, chairman of The Halls Homeless Support Project who were chosen as one of the charities to support through fundraising.

Project leader for NCS at West Nottinghamshire College Nigel Oldham said: “This was another happy and successful graduation event for our groups who took part in the project this summer.

“There was a great sense of pride from participants, their families and all the support staff who made these activities possible.  The event was a great opportunity for the graduates to meet their new-found friends and celebrate together. We look forward to hosting more NCS projects in the future.”
