It’s a walk in the park for students

Students took time off from their last lesson of the term last week for a fundraising challenge in Mansfield.

Tutors and learners on West Nottinghamshire College's NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education course put their walking shoes on for a 2-mile sponsored walk in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Kitted out in the official yellow Marie Curie fundraising bibs, the group of 18 walked from the college’s Derby Road campus to Mansfield’s Berry Hill Park and back again last Friday (15 April).

Programme area leader for the early years, Leslye Henstock said: “Last term the students voted which charity they wanted to support and Marie Curie Cancer Care came out on top, as many of the group have family and friends who've been affected by cancer.

“The sponsored walk was a real success and it was a good reason to get out into our community and exercise at the same time.”

Childcare student Amira Fanous, 18, said: “We feel really proud of the fundraising we’ve done.  With the recent fundraising through cake sales, tombolas and raffles and now this sponsored walk, we'll have raised nearly £500 for the charity.”

The group will continue with their fundraising in June when they take part in Marie Curie’s adrenalin challenge called ‘The Big Zip’, which is a zip wire activity across the River Trent in Nottingham.
