Red Nose antics ahead at college

“I’m a student – get me out of here!” will be the cry from learners at West Nottinghamshire College next week in a drive to raise cash for Comic Relief.

A week of fundraising kicks off on Monday (14 March) when votes open for students to choose a staff member they’d like to see dunked in a bath of baked beans.  For a £1 charge, students can place their vote and the gunging takes place on Friday.

The Students’ Union will be hosting their version of ‘bush tucker trials’ on Tuesday (15 March), when students will be swapping their regular lunch for creepy critters such as giant toasted ants and ant wafers, Thai fried giant crickets, oysters in pickled sauce and baby eels in garlic.

On Wednesday and Thursday (16 and 17 March) computer science students will be aiming to set a world record in a sponsored ‘Rock Band Challenge’.  The goal will be to run full band relays throughout the day, with teams changing every hour.

The Students’ Union will also be raising additional cash on Thursday through face painting and craft activities, together with competitions to guess the name of the teddy bear and the number of sweets in a jar.

The week of fun comes to a close on Friday with staff and students at all college sites dressing in red for a £1 donation to Comic Relief.  A fancy dress fun run takes place during Friday lunchtime and beauty therapy students will be offering nail-painting in return for a donation to the charity.

Students’ Union events officer Sam Cooling-Severns said: “It’s going to be a lively week and there’s a buzz already around the college campuses about the activities we’ve got lined up.

“Our students love a challenge and they’re always keen to raise lots of money for national fundraising events.  They’re hoping to make this the best Comic Relief ever.”

All events take place at the college's Derby Road campus in Mansfield.
