On a journey to top careers

A wide spectrum of careers in the travel and tourism industry was promoted by students at West Nottinghamshire College last week.

  • Students heard a range of careers advice from the university centre's lecture theatre
  • Guest speakers came from companies such as Thomas Cook
  • Jan Barrett from Crich Tramway Village spoke to students about the careers and opportunities at the museum
  • Shoe Aid was the charity of choice for this year's careers fair
  • Students put together a range of information on travel companies and tourist attractions

The Travel and Tourism Industry Event 2017, which took place on Monday (22 May), was organised entirely by the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Travel and Tourism group, welcomed representatives from Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Thomson, Thomas Cook and other holiday companies.

Guest speakers included representatives from Mansfield Manor Hotel, Crich Tramway Museum, The Maypole Hotel in Wellow, Thomson, Thomas Cook, British Airways, Center Parcs and Shoe aid.

They offered students information on the range of jobs within their organisations and how they can apply for vacancies. The college’s own Higher Education team were on hand to discuss higher-level study in the industry.

During the event, students raised funds for their chosen charity, Shoe Aid UK, by asking staff and students from across the college campuses to donate their old shoes. The charity then uses the shoes to pass to partner organisations such as the National Police Aid Convoys, Framework and Groundwork, to help those less fortunate.

The careers fair was open to all other travel and tourism learners at the college to help them choose their study and career pathway in this varied sector. A range of advice about travel companies and tourist attractions was available at the information stand which students had prepared in detail.

Tutor Sabrina Sandhu said: “I’m very proud of all the students who prepared and planned the event so well and would like to congratulate them on their professionalism throughout the day.

“The whole day was very inspiring and our guest speakers provided a real-life insight into the different careers and job opportunities available to young people and what’s is like working in this industry. We thank our guest speakers for giving up their time to provide such a fantastic opportunity for the students.”
