Students to perform contemporary take on ‘The Scottish Play’

A contemporary take on the Shakespeare classic, Macbeth, will be performed by students at West Nottinghamshire College as part of their end-of-year project.

Audiences will see greed, desire and averis courtesy of this modern interpretation of Macbeth by HND performing arts students

Second year HND performing arts students are bringing the play to the college’s Create Theatre, at its Derby Road campus in Mansfield, on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 May, both 7pm.

Audiences will see greed, desire and avarice depicted in this modern interpretation of the play – directed by performing arts tutor Andrew Proctor – based on the original, written more 400 years ago.

Three weird sisters prophesise to Macbeth that he will one day be king. Driven on by his wife, Macbeth sets out to ensure the omen comes true. The actions have deadly consequences and together they start a chain of events which leads to the play’s tragic end.

Kerry Pilcher, curriculum manager for performing arts and higher education, said: “The students have worked really hard to develop an exciting and accessible version of Macbeth set in a modern-day context.

“The cast had the additional challenge of organising and supporting the technical aspects of the production, drawing together the creative and practical skills they’ve developed on their higher education course. The result of their efforts is a strong, engaging performance to be proud of.”

Tickets costing £5 and £3 for students and concessions can be purchased at www.createtheatre.co.uk or on 01623 413363.
